Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used as a complementary treatment for your patients to help enhance and speed up recovery from podiatric surgery or other ailments. It can be especially beneficial for post-surgical complications such as AVN or non-union fractures.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is indicated for patients with Wagner grade 3 diabetic foot ulcers, chronic refractory osteomyelitis, acute peripheral arterial thrombosis/occlusion/insufficiency, acute traumatic peripheral ischemia, acute crush injury, and compartment syndrome.

Enhances fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, decreasing fibrosis
Enhances leukocyte oxidative killing
Has a potent anti-inflammatory effect reducing swelling and edema
Stimulates angiogenesis
Synergistic effect of HBOT plus antibiotics by enhancing bacterial cell wall penetration and direct toxic of effect of HBOT on anaerobic organisms
Enhances stem cell proliferation from the bone marrow and migration to the area of injury
Reduces intravascular leukocyte adherence in crush injury (reperfusion injury)

Referral Criteria for HBOT Diabetic Foot Ulcer

Insurance regulations mandate the following:

History and Physical
Operative report describing a non-healing, infected deep ulceration; must have evidence of abscess involving bone/joint or tendon of the lower extremity in a diabetic
Unresponsive to at least one month of documented meticulous wound care

*Evidence of an osteomyelitis demonstrated by MRI/bone scan or bone culture are acceptable*
